In manufacturing units, a lot depends
on the stock they possess. In fact, the production is based entirely on
the stock of materials that are present in the stores. It is the routine
of the store manager to share the quantity of stock available with the
production managers. The daily production target is decided keeping the
stock in view. If there is anything that is going below the requirement,
the production managers inform the store manager about it. The store
manager then sends a request to purchase to the procurement department
head who then asks for its timely delivery by the suppliers. This chain
of information allows the production unit to operate successfully on a
daily basis.
Solid materials are easy to stack and store. If the
materials are too large in quantity they can be put in racks or the
cartons can be stacked one on top of another. This creates enough space
for larger quantities to be accommodated in a small space. But when the
matter comes to handle liquids, it cannot be stacked like the solid
materials. A special container is needed to keep the liquids in.
Different types of liquids cannot be kept in a single container as they
will mix together destroying each other. So as the variety of liquids
increases, the number of tanks and containers also increase. The human
eye cannot see inside the tank unless it is made of glass. So to learn
about the level of liquids inside the tank a
liquid level indicator is attached to it.
Liquids
that are sensitive in nature or are of the nature to produce toxic
fumes, they are stored inside single skinned containers. This ensures
that the environment remains safe and the liquid has no chances of
leaking. The container has not opening on any side of the body except
for the two pipes one on top and the other on the bottom. The pipe on
top is used for the inlet when filling the container with the liquid.
The one on the bottom is the one that lets the liquid out.
With the help of the
ultrasonic level indicator
the staff measures the liquid inside the container. Regular measurement
and keeping records of it helps the staff know about the availability
of the liquids. The daily report of the consumption and remaining liquid
helps in deciding the production targets and then forwarding those
targets to the concerned production departments.
