For a transport ship to sail profitably it is important that the goods that it is carrying remain safe and sound throughout the voyage. Every transport ship is fitted with at least one hatch cover or it can more if the ship is huge and has more than one cargo holds. Since a transport ship is loaded and unloaded from the top with the help of huge cranes, the cargo holds are roofless and the hatch covers are its roofs.
