Any ship that sets out to sail needs to have proper security arrangements. Being new gives it an advantage of not having to encounter maintenance problems, but the old ones can face many problems. There are more chances of a ship catching fire if it has old wiring and old structure. In case it is carrying an inflammable material onboard, it should be prepared to fight any misfortunes that may come on it. Fires are some of the commonest problems faced by ships that are not entirely new. There might be a short circuit powerful enough to ignite a blaze.
In case there are risks of fire, carrying a lot of fire extinguishers is a good thought. But there should be an advanced fire suppression system too such as the
FM 200 fire suppression system which proves effective to fight against fire. Class A, B and C fires are not a problem for this fire suppression system. It can effectively manage to kill the flames before they do much harm. In case there has been a case of fire and the FM 200 fire managing system isn’t available, the crew will have a difficult time combating the flames. A lot of man power will be needed plus a lot of other equipment will be needed most of which is not available immediately in case of an emergency such as this.
FM 200 is a gas and this makes it work best on ships. Being able to vaporize after being released, it never causes added weight to a single compartment hence it does not malign the ship’s balance. At times the ship can gain added weight to a single side when water is used to diffuse fire. Fire might be put out completely but it clearly endangers the ship’s stability. An unstable ship can be turned turtle by the smallest external force. Hence causing the ship to lose its balance is as bad as losing it to fire. The cargo would be lost at sea and the crew will be thrown overboard.
Even if you are sure that you won’t be troubled by fire on a voyage, make sure you have checked the cylinders that they are full. The
ultrasonic liquid level indicator will be very helpful in assisting to check the levels in the cylinders. Once you have checked them, make sure that they are to the full. Carrying empty cylinders is not something to be proud of. The results can be devastating.
