There are a lot of incidents where the hatch covers of the cargo holds gave birth to leaks and holes without the crew being aware of them and a cargo worth billions of dollars was gone to waste. Since it is important for the ship to be extremely watertight when it sails, the doors leading to the different compartments should also be checked and made leak free. Some unfortunate ships have disappeared from the map of this world when the compartments got flooded and caused the ship to lose its balance. As the water filled inside the compartments, the ship lost its ability to float and hence was drowned to the depths of the ocean.
